Strength and vibration analysis for machinery, equipment and components in ship structures

GL Engineering Services helps clients develop safe and reliable mechanical components or technical systems in ship structures.

GL offers:

  • Propulsion shaft alignment
  • Residual lifetime of machinery components
  • Damage analysis
  • Strength analysis concerning mechanical engineering components (e.g. piping analyses, tank analyses)
  • Vibration analysis (aggregates, foundations, mountings, etc.)
  • Fatigue analysis of mechanical engineering components in ship structures (tanks, vessels, etc.)

Strength and vibration analysis for machinery, equipment and components in industry

GL Engineering Services helps clients develop a safe and reliable mechanical component or technical system. The main service areas are concerned within the ship-, offshore- and industrial market. The principal assessment includes strength and vibration analyses for machinery, equipment and components.

Typical services are:

  • Strength analyses in accordance with well-established rules and industry standards or equivalence analyses
  • Fatigue analyses (classical and fracture mechanics)
  • Vibration analyses (free and force-induced vibration analyses)
  • Damage analyses
  • Life time extension analyses

Strength- and vibration analyses of onshore- and offshore pipelines

To ensure the safe, reliable and environmentally friendly transportation of hazardous materials, it is essential to verify the pipeline design. GL acts as a third party for design verification. In order to be independent, most of the analyses are performed using in-house software. During pipeline life time GL performs flaw assessments, integrity management and evaluation of changed operating conditions.

GL offers:

  • wall thickness determination (especially for deep water conditions)
  • on-bottom stability
  • free span analyses (static, vortex-induced vibrations, fatigue)
  • local buckling
  • global buckling (lateral- and upheaval buckling)
  • riser analyses (static and fatigue)
  • crossing analyses
  • impact analyses (trawl gear interaction)
  • laying analyses (normal, dynamic, abandonment & recovery , lifting, Tie-in)
  • jumper analyses (static, VIV, fatigue)
  • flaw assessment (ASME B31G, Kastner, BS 7910, etc. including crack growth analyses)
  • pressure up-rating
  • risk analyses for offshore & onshore pipelines (using GALIOM).

Consultancy concerning the use of sulphur reduced fuel

Effective from July, 1st 2010 the sulphur content of the fuel used is reduced to 1% in the zone of SECA/ECA (Sulphur / Emission Control Area). As a result, vessels upon entering an ECA must switch to low sulphur fuel operation in time if high sulphur fuel oil is used outside the ECA.

GL offers:

  • Preparation of ship specific Fuel Change-over Manuals, which guides the crew during the changeover.
  • Consulting services during adjustment of the fuel system to comply with low sulphur fuel requirement
