Shipping Basics

The module explains the connections between the crew, ship, cargo and the shipping company. In addition, major regulations and conventions regarding ship safety and the protection of the marine environment are introduced. Practical case studies deepen the insight gained.

Course objective


Participants will gain basic knowledge of the procedures aboard and ashore.


Emphasis

  • The shipping company: structures and responsibilities
  • The ship: types of ships, ship dimensions, hull, machinery, safety equipment, load line and tonnage measurement
  • The crew: qualification and manning of ships
  • The cargo: tapes of cargoes, charter parties and cargo documents
  • The organisations and regulations in shipping: IMO, flag states, class societies, safety and marine environmental conventions
    (including codes)
  • The insurance: transport, damage and P&I insurance
