Exhaust emission approval and certification: rely on GL's experience. We shed light on the complex issue of the applicable air pollution prevention legislation, for instance the IMO MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI and NOx Technical Code, the RVIR (Rhine Vessel Inspection Regulation (Chapter 8a)), the NRMM (EU Non-Road Mobile Machinery) according to 97/68/EC amended by 2004/26/EC, the RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) according to 94/25/EC amended by 2003/44/EC, the BSO (Lake Constance Shipping Ordinance (Bodenseezulassung)) and other EC regulations.
In due time we provide guidance on how to achieve the required approval and certificates for exhaust emission measurements and chemical analysis, exhaust emission measurements on test beds according to relevant legal requirements (e.g. IMO, RVIR) or based on the international standard series ISO 8178. Furthermore, GL offers appropriate investigations on board ships. The GL exhaust laboratory is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2000.

Pressure equipment
The "Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC (PED)" governs the pressure equipment manufacturing and its placing on the EU market. It applies to vessels and assemblies, piping, safety and pressure accessories exposed to a maximum allowable pressure exceeding 0.5 bar. Depending on the level of hazard, the pressure equipment is to be classified into categories which determine the conformity assessment procedure and hence the scope of testing. GL is accredited as a notified body (identification no. 0098) and certifies all types of pressure equipment, such as heat exchangers, pressure vessels and steam boilers, considering several applicable codes and standards.
For gas cylinders (bottles, receptacles) and tank containers, GL is accredited to the "Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive 1999/36/EC (TPED)".
Furthermore, air locks and components of tunnelling machines according to applicable standards will be performed.

MED - Marine Equipment Directive
MED applies to equipment listed in Annex A.1 of the Directive: life-saving appliances, marine pollution prevention equipment, fire protection equipment, navigation equipment and radio communication equipment is to be placed on board according to international conventions. According to the MED, a conformity assessment procedure has to be performed to obtain the "Mark of Conformity". This is required for equipment placed on board any EU member state's ship and ships of countries which have agreed to apply the MED.
A manufacturer has to gain the conformity assessment for one type of equipment by only one notified body. It reduces costs for manufacturers, who no longer have to produce multinational versions of their equipment. There is a multiple choice of conformity assessment procedures. If the equipment is within the scope of the Mutual Recognition Agreement between the EU and the USA, the manufacturer may also apply for the issuing of a US Coast Guard Approval Number.
