Compliance with international requirements
Today a ship has to meet a continually-increasing number of requirements asked for by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Flag state administrations are responsible for ensuring compliance.
Nearly all flag states delegate statutory tasks to selected recognised classification societies. With this delegation and after authorisations given by flag state administrations, these classification societies act on behalf of the flag state in question. GL is presently authorised to act on behalf of 130 flag states, comprising all major flags states and all of the EU member states.
GL establishes a continuous contact with flag state administrations and extends the relationship to them. We offer technical expertise on classification and statutory areas to flag state administrations to perform statutory services or to become newly recognised and authorised by further flag states. All these activities are organised and carried out by our GL department "Flag State Affairs".
