Certification for compliance with the IMSBC Code

The BC Code has been replaced by the mandatory International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code, the IMSBC Code, came into force on 1 January, 2011. Certification of dry cargo ships in view of compliance with the provisions of the Code via GL PROTOS is being demanded increasingly by the industry. GL PROTOS is assisting all parties involved with sea transport of dry bulk cargoes and will become even more important upon the mandatory application of the Code.

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) is assisting owners and shippers in the field of sea transport of dry bulk cargoes with a database-aided service, paying due regard to the actual development. The content of the GL PROTOS database, available to our clients, does cover all new cargoes and amendments made to individual cargo entries as introduced by the new IMSBC Code. The certification of bulk carriers and multi purpose ships for compliances with the special provisions specified for individual dry bulk cargoes has been adjusted to the IMSBC Code likewise.

Based on a survey conducted by GL and the review of documents and drawings, the ship is provided with a Document of Compliance (DoC) for the Carriage of Solid Bulk Cargoes, the so-called Bulk Certificate. GL is authorized by major Flag State Administrations for this newly introduced certification procedure. The requirements for transportation of individual cargoes according to the IMSBC Code are available via the web service.

Existing DoCs with reference to the BC Code for ships in service will remain valid until reissue on the occasion of change of flag or class renewal. On special request of our clients GL will reissue a new DoC with reference to the IMSBC Code premature. A survey is not required for reissuance of an existing DoC.
