Power Generation
Delivering performance for power utilities and plants
Despite the current economic downturn, global energy demand will continue to rise in the long term, driven by a steadily growing world population and intensifying industrialization. Along with ambitious legislative efforts to reduce the environmental impact of power plants, the stage for continued market growth is set. A very dynamic environment, in which the 2012 Kyoto deadline casts its shadows.
Whether it is about planning, manufacturing, installation or commissioning for the conventional or nuclear energy: GL delivers engineering and inspection services along the entire life cycle. GL aids to mitigate risks and safeguard the performance of a power plant investment.
Feasibility Studies
Feasibility studies are critical to identifying the most technically and economically favourable conditions, sites and factors for power plants. GL analyses physical, environmental and technical constraints, assesses sites with regard to construction (such as supply constraints, operation conditions and operating manpower supply), infrastructure and logistical conditions critical to construction and operations. GL further analyses fuel, cooling water and grid connections and assesses emissions, licensing and regulatory requirements. In addition, GL provides basic plant design and process parameter and carries out financial feasibility assessments.
Project Monitoring and Owner's Engineer
GL identifies significant risks in the early stages and defines counter-measures to ensure that tight project schedules are met. GL offers design and calculations review, technical advice in the design stage; material examinations, material certificates and verification of delivery dates in the procurement stage. In the manufacturing stage, GL provides supplier audits, manufacturing supervision, certification of components, pre-ship inspections and expediting. Finally, in the construction stage GL offers delivery inspection, site supervision, provision of supervisors, progress monitoring as well as preparation of commissioning for all safety-relevant and performance-critical components of the power plant.
Risk, Safety and Environmental Studies
Risk and safety requirements are rising constantly for the power plant industry. GL provides Risk and safety management including HAZOP / HAZID Services, Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), Dispersion Studies, Health Risk Assessments, Human Factors, Emergency Response Planning and Safety Integrity Level analyses (SIL). GL offers Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan.
Efficiency Improvement
Plant efficiency is the driving factor for return on investment in the operations phase, and reduction of planned and unplanned plant downtimes is a key. With Asset Integrity Management GL provides Reliability, Availability and Maintainability assessments (RAM), Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Assessments (FMECA) as well as Statutory and risk-based inspections and maintenance strategies.
Emissions and performance monitoring
GL offers design, installation, commissioning and customer support of automatic emissions reporting and performance tracking system. Studies on operations, mechanical stability and vibration investigations can also be provided.
Carbon Capture and Storage
GL helps to ensure global emission reduction targets by providing consulting services and studies for carbon capture and storage technology including capture, transport and storage phase. GL offer technical and economical feasibility studies, technical certification, design reviews and inspection, support on regulation, hazard and risk management including a full-scale test site for CO2 systems such as transport pipeline integrity and dispersion studies. GL is accredited certification body to verify Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) projects.
