Certification

Renewable energy projects

Certification of wind farms, wind turbines and their components is state-of-the-art and a must in most places around the world. Furthermore, certification to harmonised requirements actively supports exports. GL is the leading certification body in the wind-energy sector, offering project and type certifications, also in the other fields of renewable-energy exploitation for manufacturers, banks and insurers of wind turbines and components.

Type certification
The most important part of the type certification is the assessment of the design documentation, a thorough design review with respect to the requirements defined in the relevant codes and standards. The testing of the prototype wind turbine represents the practical aspects of the type certification, whereas the quality management system confirms the manufacturer's management system to be in accordance with ISO 9001. The evaluation of the implementation of design-related requirements in Production and Erection (IPE) forms an integral part of the certification process, which is carried out through inspections at the manufacturer or respective sub-supplier. Statements of compliance for these steps as well as the type certificate will attest to the finalisation of the certification of the type of a wind turbine. It does not apply for actual installations or projects. The type certificate has a validity period of two years. A re-certification is possible in order to renew the certificate.

Project certification
The purpose of project certification is the evaluation of a type-certified wind turbine in order to ensure that the specific design is in conformity with the certification guidelines and codes relevant at the site. In this connection, the site-specific external conditions, such as wind and wave distribution, soil investigations and soil parameters, sea-ice, corrosion, marine growth, electrical grid conditions and wind farm configuration, have to be considered. Furthermore, it has to be assured by independent surveillance of manufacturing, transportation, installation and commissioning that wind turbines and support structures conform to the certified specifications and that no serious shortcomings or damages exist. Periodic monitoring serves as an independent check on the condition of the wind turbines and support structures during operation and it is necessary for the maintenance of the project certificate.

Development Accompanying Assessment
Development Accompanying Assessment (DAA) combines design and certification of wind turbines. An intense collaboration between the turbine designer or manufacturer and the certification body is proposed at an early stage of the turbine development. The benefits of this approach include reduced time-to-market and improved product quality.

Training
In wind energy, the operating environment, specifications and guidelines change quickly and innovation cycles are short. GL offers tailormade and topic-specific seminars and workshops, fitted to fulfil individual requirements. The seminars present an overview of the technology, regulations, certifications, site specific analyses and associated verifications. Topics covering load assumptions, safety systems, machinery components, rotor blades, towers, foundations and offshore installations are dealt with in detail by GL. Together with WINDTEST GL illuminates technical issues related to measurements and analyses for wind turbines (e.g. power curve, loads, grid quality, sound). Seminars can be arranged on the customers´ choice. Upon conclusion participants will receive the certificate of participation demonstrating improved competence on the topics involved. GL arrange courses and events that are individually adapted to suit the customer's particular needs and requirements.
