Hazard and Risk Management
GL has developed a wide range of world-class mathematical models for hazard and risk management, validated by large scale experiments at the Spadeadam Test Site and extensive operating data.
Safety Assessment
GL has developed a range of world-class mathematical models to perform safety assessments for oil, gas and petrochemical facilities including models for fuel release, dispersion and build-up, fire and explosion consequence and risk. These models allow us to tackle a wide range of safety issues, to help manage risk cost-effectively, and to achieve compliance. Applications have included:
Preparation of Safety Reports for Major Hazard Sites
- In-depth evaluation of the societal risk for high consequence events
- Cost benefit studies to demonstrate existing risks are as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) occupied buildings studies
- Design Studies
Pipeline Risk Assessment
Transportation of gas and other hydrocarbons through pipelines presents some degree of risk, however small. GL has developed innovative techniques to assist pipeline owners or operators in managing the risks presented by their pipelines cost-effectively. These techniques are based on world-class mathematical models to predict both the likelihood and the consequences of failure, validated by extensive operating experience in the UK and unique experimental data, often obtained at full scale.
Natural Gas Transmission Pipelines
GL developed the PIPESAFE risk assessment package for gas transmission pipelines, as part of an international collaboration. PIPESAFE can be used to address pipeline routing issues, emergency planning requirements, infringements to design codes or pipeline uprating.
Natural Gas Distribution Pipelines
Techniques have been developed by GL to predict gas release behaviour and the likelihood of a fire or explosion following failures of distribution mains. These techniques can be used to prioritise ageing pipelines for replacement, establish design codes, provide support for proposed changes in operations and address pipeline routing issues.
