Prototype Testing

General

Within the scope of Prototype Testing the following measurements are carried out:

  • power curve
  • noise emission
  • electrical properties
  • a test of wind turbine behaviour
  • load measurements

Furthermore the prototype of the gearbox is to be tested on an adequate test bench and on the prototype turbine. In order to validate the design calculations, to optimise control, performance and noise behaviour and to verify the performance of the safety and control systems the prototype testing is an integral part of the design and certification process.

Topics

The topics as indicated in the table below are to be verified by measurements which shall be based on the relevant standards mentioned. The measured results are to be evaluated and documented. The test reports will be checked for plausibility of the measured results and compared to the assumptions in the design documentation.

Topics for Measurements Codes or Standards to be applied
Power Curve IEC 61400-12-1 [8]
Noise Emissions IEC 61400-11 [9]
Actions, loads and stresses, dynamic behaviour IEC TS 61400-13 [10]
Electrical Characteristics IEC 61400-21 [11]
Blade Tests IEC TS 61400-23 [5]
Commissioning, Safety and Function Test GL Guideline [2]

Elements of Prototype Testing and the respective Standards

Institutions

For the incorporation of measurements in the certification process the measurements shall be performed by independent institutions accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025, alternatively witnessing of the calibration and plausibility checks of the measurements by the GL or by an accredited institute are required. The test of the gearbox on the manufacturers test bench shall be witnessed by GL.
