- New Class Notations on Vapor Emission Control and Dangerous Solid Bulk Cargoes - Revised Coating Guidelines
Hamburg, 16 February 2005 – With the revision of its Rules “Part 0 – Classification and Surveys”, Germanischer Lloyd introduced the new Class Notations VEC (vapour emission control) for tankers and DBC for ships carrying dangerous solid cargoes in bulk. The revision also integrated a number of IACS resolutions as well as SOLAS regulations. The “GL Guidelines for Corrosion Protection and Coating Systems” have been revised as well.
The most important amendments of Part 0 are outlined below: • The definition of the “contract for construction date” in particular with reference to series of vessels, optional vessels of the series and sister vessels has been clarified. • The "exceptional circumstances" under which an extension by three months of the maximum interval between two successive bottom surveys can be granted have been stated. • In addition a more detailed specification is given of the requirements for in-water survey in lieu of dry-docking. • All affected bulk carriers have to comply with the requirements in accordance with SOLAS concerning water ingress detection and alarms as well as dewatering systems. • The scope of Class renewal survey III for single skin bulk carriers has been increased by one selected cargo hold and the number of frames to be examined. • Criteria as regards hull survey of double skin bulk carriers are introduced. • General dry cargo ships are excluded from the continuous Class renewal (hull) procedure. • For continuous Class renewal (hull) the survey in dry dock may be held at any time within the five year Class period. • For vessels subject to ESP the planning document for Class renewal will be prepared by GL head office and adjusted to the actual situation found on board. • All AUT surveys for ships in service are now integrated in the Class annual, intermediate and renewal survey.
