| Hamburg/Piraeus, 17 March 2005 – The implementation of the Annex VI of MAPROL on the prevention of air pollution from Ships was in the focus of a seminar by GL Academy. Over 35 representatives of shipping companies attended the event, which was held at the Metropolitan Hotel in Athens.
Hans-Joachim Goetze, Head of the Combustion Engines Department at Germanischer Lloyd, explained the requirements posed by the new emission regulations. Marpol Annex VI – Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships – will enter into force on 19th of May. According to these regulations, the emissions must be drastically reduced within a short space of time; this can be done by means of low-sulphur fuel, catalytic converters or exhaust-gas cleaning systems. Marpol Annex VI requires an International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) Certificate for all ships of over 400 GT.
Proper implementation of the new regulations on board will be monitored within the scope of recurrent surveys. After an ”Initial Survey“, the IAPP Certificate will be issued for a validity period of five years
Germanischer Lloyd has extensive experience in the certification of marine engines. As a ‘recognized organisation’ for the majority of the relevant flag states, GL offers certification of the engines independently of the actual class of the ship. Thanks to its close cooperation with leading engine manufacturers worldwide, Germanischer Lloyd can also act in an advisory capacity for technical questions relating to exhaust-gas cleaning systems. As a supplementary service, Germanischer Lloyd offers mobile emission measurements which can be performed either at the engine manufacturer or on board the ships.
