Demand for the Certification of Condition Monitoring Systems: Insurance Companies Value the GL Wind Guideline

Hamburg, 17 August 2005 – Since publication of its “Guideline for the Certification of Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS) for Wind Turbines” in the year 2003, Germanischer Lloyd WindEnergie GmbH (GL Wind) has certified eight CMSs and two monitoring bodies. Unrestricted functional readiness of the monitoring systems used for wind turbines is a major prerequisite for their profitability. Not only is the reliable monitoring of all system components able to reduce the costs of operating such an installation, it is also rewarded by numerous insurance companies with lower premiums.

With the Guideline for the Certification of Condition Monitoring Systems, GL Wind has set the safety standard worldwide. The company is the leading certification body in the wind energy sector, and to date is the only one that inspects and certifies the condition monitoring systems.

The safety aspects of a wind turbine with a service life of up to 150,000 working hours pose great challenges for the manufacturers, plant operators and certification body alike. Continuous quality-oriented monitoring of the operational states of an installation is essential in ensuring its economic success. Thanks to condition monitoring systems (CMS), the external and internal state of a wind turbine can be examined systematically for significant deviations from normal performance. Components with “conspicuous behaviour” can be detected and then readjusted or exchanged in good time. Condition monitoring systems have proven their worth in many areas of industry, e.g. in power generation and for rolling mills.
