First Customers for GLC after Accreditation for Aerospace Products Certification of Airbus Suppliers ASKON and Rheinmetall Defence Electronics to EN 9100

Hamburg, 12 October 2005 – Germanischer Lloyd Certification GmbH (GLC) has certified ASKON Beratungs GmbH and Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH according to the EN 9100 standard. Rainer Schöndube, Member of the Executive Board at Germanischer Lloyd, handed over the certificates to the two Airbus suppliers at Head Office in Hamburg today. With certification to EN 9100, contractors qualify themselves for inclusion in the international OASIS database (Online Aerospace Supplier Information System). This database is used by manufacturers in the aerospace industry to select their suppliers, vendors and service providers. Only recently, GLC was recognized for the certification of aerospace supply companies according to the EN 9100 standard; the German Association for Accreditation (TGA) issued the accreditation to the subsidiary of Germanischer Lloyd in September. With the two Airbus suppliers, the first customers have now been won. ASKON is one of the 15 strategic suppliers of the Airbus Group, and is specialized in innovation consultancy for and execution of technology projects, especially in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, which was chosen as a partner for the witness audit, is a main supplier to Airbus. The company provides products and system solutions for the armed forces, law enforcement and training, with a special focus on unmanned air vehicles and aviation systems and components.  The AS/EN/JISQ 9100 industry standard was developed by the aircraft industry on the basis of ISO 9001 and contains, in addition to the requirements of ISO 9001:2000, international sector-specific concepts and requirements set by the civilian and military aircraft industry for their supply companies. The standard is published in Europe as EN 9100, in the USA as AS 9100 and in the Far East as JISQ 9100. In the course of certification, GLC examined the product monitoring sequences during the entire life cycle as well as the documentation of the manufacturing process, the working procedures and the stakeholders, such as employees, customers and government representatives. GLC is able to offer its services regarding examination of the quality standard as per EN 9100 to all national and international suppliers of the European, American and Asian aerospace industries.  Germanischer Lloyd Certification GmbH (GLC) is a unit of Germanischer Lloyd Industrial Services (GLIS). Thanks to its worldwide network of auditors and experts, it is able to provide independent assessments of management systems in the fields of quality, environment, health and safety, and risk management. With the “Cool Chain Quality Indicators (CCQI)”, GLC has set the standard for the transport and handling of temperature-controlled goods; this standard also includes a benchmarking system.
