| Hamburg, 20 December 2005 – Brazil has further amended the implemented national legislation on Ballast Water Management: For all vessels, indepent of flag, a Ballast Water Management Plan approved by the vessel’s classification society is required.
This regulation is applicable to all vessels that discharge ballast water in Brazilian jurisdictional waters. The sequential method, the flow-through method and the dilution method of ballast water exchange are accepted. They must be conducted at least 200 nautical miles from the coast and in water at least 200 metres in depth. Special provisions apply for the Amazon and Para rivers. The requirements will be monitored through the inspection of the Ballast Management Plan and the Ballast Water Reporting Form. The national regulation entered into force on October 15, the amendment was announced on November 18.
