2005-04-11   Germanischer Lloyd a Reliable Partner in Ice Class Classification
Navigating ships in ice pose a number of unique risks. The most obvious threats come from the increased loads on the ship through ice contact. These are applied not only to the hull of the ship, but also to the propulsion system and appendages such as the rudder. Additionally, low ambient temperatures reduce the ductility of the ship materials. Together with the ice, cold temperatures also reduce the effectiveness of many components critical to ship operations ranging from machinery on the deck to sea suctions below the waterline.

2005-04-11   Germanischer Lloyd Develops New Class Notation for Corrosion Protection in Cargo Oil Tanks
Corrosion is one of the decisive factors influencing service life and profitability of ships, above all for tankers. Damages to the outer skin, the tanks and especially the cargo tanks can lead to huge financial losses, for example through costly repairs, lengthy downtime or cargo restrictions. A lot of money is at stake when it comes to chemical and oil products: The coatings have to protect the tanks from corrosion by the cargo, and must also prevent contamination of the cargo. Partial coating of cargo tanks became a standard requirement for oil tanker newbuildings. Ship owners therefore have a high interest in class support in corrosion protection systems.

2005-04-04   GL Wind Inspects Turbines for Full Insurance Cover
When wind turbines are damaged, their operators suffer great expense as a rule. With a view to preventing damage, Germanischer Lloyd WindEnergie GmbH (GL Wind), the market leader in the product certification of wind turbines, recommends regular condition inspections of the installations. Excessive material loading is frequently caused at wind turbines by vibration. With the aid of vibration measurements, weak points at the gearbox, generator and/or main bearing can be localized during an inspection of the plant. Vibration measurements are prescribed by the insurance companies. With the ”condition-based inspection”, measurements of the vibration form a prerequisite for unrestricted insurance cover of wind turbines.
