Canadian Committee of Germanischer Lloyd Meets in Montreal |
| |
The “Hull Lifecycle Management Report” was introduced at the 13th annual meeting of the Canadian Committee of Germanischer Lloyd in Montreal. It is a tool to monitor the ship’s condition throughout its lifetime, according to Jens Schreiter, Head of Division Ships in Operation at Germanischer Lloyd. He presented the Hull Lifecycle Program (HLP) which generates a 3D-computer model of the ship’s hull to evaluate the longitudinal strength, fatigue and buckling. With the results of this calculation an in-depth survey of both the vessel’s hull and machinery is conducted. Thickness measurements as well as extensive tests of relevant machinery elements will be taken to support the survey. The results will be used to monitor the ship’s condition throughout the lifetime and help to immediately react on variations in the measurement results.

Broken or deformed propeller blades, dented or ruptured shell plating and framing, ship-to-ship collisions, damaged rudder blades, steering machinery or groundings could be the costly results of inappropriate navigation in Arctic Sea. Safe winter operations require intensive trainings of the crew to avoid costly damages and off-hire. Due to the enormous increase in vessel traffic in the Baltic Sea and the lack of ship officers with experience in ice navigation, new training courses have been introduced to meet the demand for practical training.

Condition Monitoring Systems Enhance Profitability of Wind Turbines – Demand is Increasing |
| |
More and more wind turbines are equipped with Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS) in order to continuously provide the operator with all data concerning the condition of wind turbines. Especially when operating offshore but also onshore systems, possible production stops can be avoided by providing early information about any changes of the operating conditions. CMS comprise all relevant operating parameters and contribute considerably to an efficient operation of wind turbines. The operating mode of CMS is certified by Germanischer Lloyd on basis of an updated standard. Amongst others, the standard’s amendments refer to the condition monitoring and identification of system components such as rotor blades. The standard is being considered as fundament for the development and installation of CMS in wind turbines. In addition, it controls the use of performance data such as analysis, interpretation and storage, as well as the necessary procedures when exceeding the fixed limit value. |

The rules for protective coatings of ballast water tanks have been tightened. In order to prevent corrosion and thus enhance ship safety, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently agreed on the new “Performance Standard for Protective Coatings” (PSPC) in ballast water tanks on newbuildings. For the shipbuilding industry the implementation poses a big challenge. What will be the consequences for shipyards, paint manufacturers, application companies, classification societies and owners? Do application methods need to be adjusted? How much documentation is necessary? These questions were discussed by more than 100 representatives of the maritime industry at an Exchange Forum “IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings” organized by Germanischer Lloyd.
