  Germanischer Lloyd has for the first time certified coating systems for offshore wind turbines. The certificate for five coating systems was handed over to RELIUS COATINGS at SMM. The document summarises the technical details and precise specifications of the certified coating systems, as well as their type approval.  
 
2008-10-27   GL Customers Discuss New IMO Convention – Ship Recycling at the Turn of the Tide?    
  Ship Recycling, a challenging aspect on the conscience of shipping, is finally being addressed by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).The MEPC convened its 58th meeting and, amongst others, approved the final draft of the Convention on Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, to be considered for final approval in May next year at the Diplomatic Conference in Hong Kong. How can shipowners and yards prepare for the new requirements? This was the key question discussed by more than 60 representatives of the shipyards, owners, and supply industry at Germanischer Lloyd’s First Class Exchange Forum.  
 
2008-10-24   14th Germanischer Lloyd Korean Shipbuilding Committee: Focus on Shipbuilding Challenges    
  More than 23 members of the Korean shipbuilding sector met for Germanischer Lloyd’s 14th Korean Shipbuilding Committee in Gyeongju, South Korea. Committee Chairman Mr H. C. Kim, Daehan Shipyard, and Secretary Mr Stefan Höner, Germanischer Lloyd, presented a programme focussing on the current shipbuilding challenges: Environmental requirements, developments of stability regulations and quality assurance were on the agenda.  
 
2008-10-23   GL Spanish Committee: Focus on Potential of Alternative Energy in Shipping    
  Worldwide efforts to limit CO2 emissions are beginning to have an impact. The dramatic price increase for fuel has started a bandwagon among shipowners to seek for energy saving potentials and ways to reduce emissions. Spanish shipowners invested 658m € last year, according to the latest studies by Spanish shipowner association Anave. This represented the largest annual investment by Spain’s shipowning community since 2004. That is why the key topic “Potentials of Alternative Energy in Shipping” was met with considerable interest by representatives of the Spanish shipping and ship building community at Germanischer Lloyd’s Spanish Committee.  
 
2008-10-23   Technical Support made in Poland – GL opens new Office    
  Classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has opened its new Technical Support Office in Gdansk, Poland, to meet the increasing demand for GL’s Emergency Response Service. Already operating offices in Gdansk, Szczecin and Katowice, GL thus offers regional as well as international support made in Poland.  
 
2008-10-10   Hellas Committee of Germanischer Lloyd Meets in Athens: Ship Emissions High on the Agenda    
  Under the chairmanship of Capt. Vassilis Constantakopoulos, senior owner of Costamare, 30 representatives of the Greek maritime community met to discuss market trends, operational challenges and new technologies to save fuel. “In the last two years, shipowners have seen bunker prices increase by roughly 140 %”, said Dr Klein, “Additionally considering upcoming environmental regulations, shipowners pay more attention to an economical and environmental friendly way of transport.” Germanischer Lloyd devotes considerable resources to its research and development efforts in the area of ship efficiency. Key objectives are cost savings, compliance with strict environmental standards, and technical safety for the maritime industry.
 
 
2008-09-26   Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference: The Gateway to Wind Energy    
  The offshore wind industry is facing challenges: The reliability, safety and protection of offshore wind turbines against operational interruption are especially demanding. These topics were discussed at the 7. Hamburg Offshore Wind Conference by more than 160 international wind experts. Developers, manufacturers, investors and operators of wind turbines debated about prototypes and mass production of wind turbines, design innovations, finance and the present sites on the European and North American wind markets.
 
 
2008-09-26   GL signs Multi-Purpose-Vessels in Bangladesh    
  Two 7,250 dwt multi-purpose-vessels are the latest addition to the orderbook of classification society Germanischer Lloyd. The ships will be built at Ananda Shipyard in Bangladesh for German shipowners Komrowski and Herrmann Lohmann Schiffahrt. Germanischer Lloyd Member of the Executive Board Dr Hermann J. Klein and Ananda Shipyard’s Managing Director Mrs. Afruja Bari signed the agreement at SMM in Hamburg.  
 
2008-09-26   Germanischer Lloyd at SMM 2008: Körting Hannover AG Applies New Product Certification System    
  German engineering company Körting Hannover AG is one of Germanischer Lloyd’s first partners in a pilot project to apply the new, modular certification system for maritime components and assemblies. An agreement for alternative product certification and a framework agreement covering all required services were signed by Körting and GL at SMM today. Following a successful process audit, the manufacturer of ejectors and vacuum technology amongst other, was declared qualified for alternative product certification.
 
 
2008-09-25   GL Joins CD-adapco's Customer Advisory Council    
  CD-adapco, the leading global provider of flow thermal stress simulation software and services, and classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) are extending their well established partnership. Both companies are already working closely together in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology for marine applications. With immediate effect, Karsten Fach, Head of Competence Centre for Engineering Services with GL, joins CD-adapco's Customer Advisory Council.  
 
2008-09-25   Germanischer Lloyd Signs new contract with DK Group - Cooperation for a 200.000 TDW Bulker Project    
  The development of energy efficient ship designs and the joint development of a 200,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) bulk carrier design was announced today by DK Group and Germanischer Lloyd (GL). Dr. Pierre C. Sames, GL Senior Vice President Strategic Research, Torsten Schramm, GL Senior Vice President Europe / Middle East / Africa and Chief Operating Officer, Jorn Winkler, DK Group Founder and Executive Vice President, and Christian Eyde Møller, DK's Chief Executive Officer, signed the contract today at SMM.  
 
2008-09-24   Germanischer Lloyd and China Ship Fund Sign Strategic Cooperation for Tankers and Bulk Carriers    
  Classification Society Germanischer Lloyd will provide engineering services to the China Ship Fund. The strategic cooperation agreement has been signed by Mr Xu Hui, Chairman Centrans, and Dr Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd, today at SMM exhibition in Hamburg.  
 
2008-09-23   Germanischer Lloyd Launches New Containership Construction Rules    
  158 containerships of 10,500 TEU and larger will enter the world fleet until early 2012. In order to take particular account of technical and structural safety aspects of the growth in size, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has presented new Construction Rules for container ships at SMM today. With a revised edition of its classification rules, the classification society supports shipyards and owners in building containerships. They define a modern standard for the classification and manufacturing of containerships.

  In the last two years, shipowners have seen bunker prices increase by roughly 140 %. Additionally considering upcoming environmental regulations, shipowners pay more attention to an economical and environmental friendly way of transport. The interest in reducing the fuel consumption for all kinds of vessels is high. Classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has responded to this demand: In a press conference at SMM today, GL presented its “GL FuelSaver” suite of new services.
 
 
2008-09-23   Seven 13,100 TEU Megaboxer with Class Germanischer Lloyd    
  Another seven ultra-large container vessels have been added to the order book: The Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has signed the contract for classification with Germanischer Lloyd (GL) today. Mr. DY Han, Senior Executive Vice President HHI and Member of GL’s Korean Shipbuilding Committee, met with Dr Hermann J. Klein, Germanischer Lloyd’s Member of the Executive Board, at the opening of the shipbuilding trade fair SMM in Hamburg.  
 
2008-09-15   Suzlon S88 V3 and V2 turbines receive updated certifications    
  Suzlon Energy Limited - the world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker with 10.5% of global market share, received updated certifications for the V3 and V2 versions of the S88 – 2.1 MW turbine. The certification comes from Germanischer Lloyd, a certification body in the field of appraisals, certifications and expertises in wind energy, and actively involved in the development of national and international standards. Germanischer Lloyd is accredited to certify in accordance with all relevant standards in the field of wind energy and ocean energy conversion.

  Lightning strike, inadequate maintenance, plant damage and human errors are the principal causes for the outbreak of fires in wind energy plants. The outcome is often a total loss of such plants.   US-based “Materials Consulting Services, Inc.” (MCS) is the latest addition to the Germanischer Lloyd Group. With the acquisition of the vendor and site inspection company based in Houston, Texas, the GL Group yet again expands its service portfolio for the oil and gas industry.  
 
2008-08-29   GL Conference Announcement: "Hamburg Offshore Wind: The Future of Offshore Wind Energy"    
  The installation of Germany's first offshore wind farm “alpha ventus” in the North Sea started in August. A milestone for Germany and all other countries: It is the first offshore wind farm in the world, consisting of 5 MW wind turbines that will be installed in water depths of up to 30 meters. To discuss current technical challenges, opportunities and results of offshore wind farms, the 7.   Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries Co., Ltd strengthens its contacts with leading classification societies. The shipyard signed a Strategic Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Hamburg based classification society Germanischer Lloyd. The Strategic Technical Cooperation Agreement covers further cooperation in the fields of Panamax and Post-Panamax Container Ship designs.  
 
2008-08-05   New Technical Committee on Risk Management Discusses “Safety Equivalence Cases” for More Flexibility in Ship Design    
  The new “Technical Committee on Risk Management” of Germanischer Lloyd was established to respond to the growing significance of risk-based approaches for the maritime industry. The new committee’s main objective is facilitation and consolidation of industry’s needs related to the application of risk-based methods for future profitable maritime business.
 
 
2008-08-01   New Chief Surveyor at Germanischer Lloyd    
  Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) new Chief Surveyor is Norbert Kray (42). He will be taking on the professional support of the classification society’s 1,000 surveyors in over 77 countries. In future, the qualified naval architect and marine technology expert will appoint new technical surveyors, monitor their work and further develop new rules for the construction and operation of ships.  
 
2008-07-29   IMO calls for increased damage stability of cargo and passenger vessels    
  The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has resolved to step up protection of new cargo and passenger vessels in the case of accident. Accordingly, all new vessels built from 1 January 2009 will be governed by new technical design regulations to ensure a higher level of stability in a damaged state. In the recently revised SOLAS regulations, the previous concept of risk assessment has been extended. On the basis of current average statistics, IMO saw itself obliged to devise a better method of assessing the residual stability of damaged vessels. This now applies not only to cargo vessels, but also to passenger vessels. The new regulations clearly stipulate that these vessels must have a double bottom that extends over their entire breadth. Vessel designs without a double bottom are only permitted if a comparable level of safety in the event of grounding is proven by means of additional calculations.  
 
2008-07-18   Germanischer Lloyd Names New Technical Manager for China    
  Mr Wolf Dieter Enter is new Technical Manager for Germanischer Lloyd in China. In his new function he will offer technical expertise to clients in the shipyard industry and maritime supply manufacturers. Furthermore, he will provide the 250 GL surveyors in China with technical guidance and instructions. “The focus is on quality support and improvement, especially in the analysis of quality aspects of production processes”, describes Mr Enter his new task. “The Technical Manager is an important point of contact for both shipyards and ship owners.”  
 
2008-07-18   GL Opens New Liaison Office in Fuzhou    
  The classification society Germanischer Lloyd has opened a new liaison office in Fuzhou to meet the increasing demand for classificatory services in that region. Operating from offices in Shanghai, Dalian, Jiangyin, Nanjing, Ningbo, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Qingdao, Yangzhou henceforth, GL offers regional customers in Fujian province its full range of services directly.  
 
2008-07-18   More than Classification: Germanischer Lloyd offers Engineering Services from Shanghai Location    
  700 ships are on order with class Germanischer Lloyd in China, but the classification society offers more than plain compliance with given rules. The Shanghai based team “Engineering Services East Asia” (ESEA) provides engineering services throughout the entire ship life cycle. Analyses of strength, vibration, acoustics, fluid dynamics and measurements are applied from the concept phase to design and construction, sea trial and ship in service.  
 
2008-07-03   New GL ShipManager 2.0 facilitates management processes and streamlines vessel operations    
  The updated software tool “GL ShipManager 2.0” improves the efficiency of shipping operations. It ensures compliance with industry requirements as well as international regulations. A new module “Reporting and Analysing, Compliance Management” keeps all national and international rules and regulations at bay.  
 
2008-06-02   GL Maritime Workshop in Taiwan Discussed Energy Efficiency    
  The classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) conducted its first maritime information workshop in Taipei. GL experts discussed current challenges of the maritime industry with a large number of representatives of the Taiwanese shipping and ship building community.  
 
2008-06-30   Five New Taiwanese Bulk Carrier Transferred to Germanischer Lloyd    
  The Taiwanese Shipping Company Wisdom Marine Lines S.A. has awarded Germanischer Lloyd with the classification of five new bulk carriers. The vessels are currently build at a Japanese shipyard and will be surveyed by the Hamburg based classification society. GL is represented by an office in Kaohsiung. It is planning to open up a country office in Taipei soon.  
 
2008-06-27   Germanischer Lloyd Signs New Contract with AUSTAL    
  Australian fast-vessel builder Austal Ships Pty Ltd. has prolonged its long-standing technical and commercial partnership with classification society Germanischer Lloyd. Austal shipyard entrusts GL exclusively with the newbuilding classification of all projects until May 2010. Several vessels to be built by Austal shipyard will be classed by Germanischer Lloyd. The new agreement provides a project-oriented plan approval service, onsite plan approval when necessary, and for the presence of experienced high speed craft surveyors on site. It was signed by Austal‘s Executive Director Mr Michael Atkinson and by George Spiliotis, Area Manager of GL Australia/New Zealand.
 
 
2008-06-20   GL Academy Hellas: Seminar Announcement "Damages to Machinery and Repairs"    
  Reliability and durability are important benchmarks for the quality of ship engines. Intelligent maintenance strategies and active damage management are essential in safeguarding a long service lifetime. For that reason, Norbert Erles who heads the Centralized Damage and Repair Management Department at Germanischer Lloyd Hamburg will hold a seminar on „Damages to Machinery and Repairs”. He informs about structured damage analysis and gives an overview of general requirements for repair work of diesel engines. The seminar takes place on June, 25, 2008 at the Piraeus Marine Club from 09:00 a.m.-17:00p.m.
 
 
2008-06-16   4th Germanischer Lloyd Korean Industry Committee    
  More than 40 members of the Korean maritime supply industry met for Germanischer Lloyd’s 4th Korean Industry Committee in Gyeongju, South Korea. Committee Chairman Mr. Seung-Nam Yoo welcomed representatives from the industry manufacturing engines, anchor chains, insulation material and rudders. Germanischer Lloyd presented a program focussing on the industry’s current challenges: Environmental requirements, quality assurance, ship recycling and inspections for the offshore industry were on the agenda.  
 
2008-06-11   GL and Helimax at Windpower Houston    
  Handover of Statement of Compliance, several project meetings with costumers and a speech about “Grid Load Planning - Dynamic Simulation of Utility-Scale Wind Farm Clusters”, these were the highlights of the fair Windpower 2008 for GL and Helimax. The growing interest in the North-American event was impressive: With 770 exhibitors and over 13,000 registrants, Windpower 2008 could nearly double the size of last year’s event.

  At IGEM’s Engineering Update Conference 2008, Advantica presents the potential of Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG) technology. ANG technology could transform the approach to natural gas storage and transportation; it offers a safer, simpler and more economic alternative to conventional storage solutions. Lay Yen Lau, Senior Process Engineer, and Rob Judd, Principal Consultant, from Advantica explained applications, advantages, limitations and developments to-date of ANG.
 
 
2008-06-11   Germanischer Lloyd at Subsea Asia    
  The subsea industry is currently experiencing a record high – by exploring record depths. Advanced and innovate solutions and technologies are in high demand. Current projects, future prospects and latest inventions in subsea development are on the agenda at “Subsea Asia”, the conference and exhibition organized by industry body SUBSEA UK taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 11 to 13 June 2008. Global engineering consultancy Germanischer Lloyd (GL) seized the opportunity to present its portfolio of services and introduce the new member of GL Group: Trident Consultants.  
 
2008-06-10   GL First Class Exchange Forum Dubai: Focus on ship related emissions to air    
  Maritime classification society Germanischer Lloyd conducted its first Exchange Forum in Dubai. The event which dealt with shipping emissions and energy efficiency, was attended by a large number of representatives from the local maritime industry in the UAE: shipping companies, ship management agencies and shipyards.

  Operation and maintenance of water distribution systems includes the regular analysis of water quality, pressure management, and pump operating costs. At AWWA 2008, Advantica demonstrates their network planning and analysis software solution SynerGEE Water. It is a simulation software package used to model and analyse water distribution systems.
 
 
2008-06-05   Posidonia: Germanischer Lloyd Establishes GL Academy Hellas    
  The newly established training institution Germanischer Lloyd Academy Hellas will offer seminars and training course on maritime technical and operational topics to the Greek shipping community. Together with the inspection office GL Piraeus, GL Academy Hellas has already carried out three seminars on the topics of “Internal Auditor ISM / ISO 9001:2000 for Shipping Companies”, “Implementation and Internal Auditing of an Environmental Management System in Shipping Companies IS0 14001:2004” and “Damage to Machinery and Repair”. Further 11 topics are scheduled until the end of the year.

  A newly established Customer Operations Service Team of Germanischer Lloyd experts supports Greek ship owners with their fleet in service and newbuilding activities. The group of Greek highly qualified marine engineers and naval architects will provide a range of engineering services from GL’s Piraeus location.
 
 
2008-06-04   Posidonia: World’s First Five Ships Operate with Operational CO2-Index    
  Five large containerships of Greek shipping company Costamare will be the first worldwide to operate in full compliance with MEPC / circ. 471 of IMO regarding operational CO2 indexing. Costamare has registered the vessels COSCO Guangzhou, COSCO, Ningbo, COSCO Yantian, COSCO Beijing and COSCO Hellas with Germanischer Lloyd’s operational CO2 indexing program. On the basis of consumed fuel, transported cargo and distance sailed, CO2 emissions are to be determined using Carbon emission factors. Computed index values can be compared to sister ships’ indices and eventually be used to minimise emissions from transport. The agreement was signed today at Posidonia between Costis V. Constantakopoulos, CEO of Costamare Shipping, and Dr. Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd.
 
 
2008-06-04   Windpower 2008: Grid Load Planning - Dynamic Simulation of Utility-Scale Wind Farm Clusters    
  The use of wind energy continues to expand. Utilities and grid system operators are preparing to integrate more of this renewable electricity source. As the output from wind farms varies with the wind regime, certain challenges need to be managed. At Windpower 2008, Dr. Dariush Faghani, Section Head Research & Development at Helimax, a member of Germanischer Lloyd group, gave methods of resolutions in his presentation “Dynamic Simulation of Utility-Scale Wind Farm Clusters”.
 
 
2008-06-03   Posidonia: GL contracts Jack Up Platform “Thor” with Hellenic Shipyards    
  Hellenic Shipyards has secured a breakthrough contract for the construction of a sea platform to accommodate offshore wind-parks for location in the Baltic and North Seas. The classification of the 70 metre platform “Thor” has been entrusted to Germanischer Lloyd. Mr. Ioannis Manolemis, Member of Hellenic Shipyards Board of Directors, and Dr. Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd signed the contract today at Posidonia.
 
 
2008-05-27   Dry Cargo International Bulk Conference: Advanced Maritime Safety with GL’s Hull Lifecycle Programme for Bulk Carriers    
  Ensuring long life and technical safety for vessels – such are the aims of the Hull Lifecycle Programme (HLP). How this new class notation and corresponding software tools help to improve monitoring and assessment of the condition of a ship’s hull throughout by means of thickness measurements, will be presented by Germanischer Lloyd at the Dry Cargo International Bulk Conference & Exhibition 2008. David C. Jaramillo, Senior Project Engineer at Germanischer Lloyd, will show the components of the Hull Lifecycle Programme and explain the benefits for ship owners and operators.
 
 
2008-05-27   High Technical Demand: GL Presents Regulations for the Grid Connection of Wind Power    
  Grid codes for wind turbines differ from one country to another. Manufacturers of wind turbines are constantly challenged to adapt the design of their turbines in line with the latest requirements of the network operators. “Wind turbines shall be configured in such a way that they are conforming to the regulations”, stated Tobias Gehlhaar from Germanischer Lloyd’s Industrial Services, Business Segment Wind Energy, Machinery Components and Safety Department, in his presentation at the 7th International Workshop on Large Scale Integration of Wind Power. “This must be taken into account in new developments and satisfied by means of innovative solutions”.  
 
2008-05-21   Defence Technology Asia 2008: GL presents New Rules for Naval Submarines    
  New international regulations and individual States’ regulations are rapidly becoming a cost effective means for ensuring a high standard of safety in naval vessels. Two presentations on this topic will be given by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) at Defence Technology Asia 2008. Dr Lars Gruenitz, Department Projects Navy at GL, will be speaking on “Classification of a Naval Submarine – The first Experience”. Michael Mechanicos, Senior Manager in Naval Services at GL Australia, will deliver a presentation on “The role of classification in the Safety Case Regime”.
 
 
2008-05-20   GL Polish Committee: Challenging Times for Polish Shipbuilding    
  Fuel consumption, optimized operation and general trends in shipping – these were the topics discussed at the 13th Polish Committee of Germanischer Lloyd (GL). Gathering at the Park Hotel in Szczecin, Poland, last Friday, about twenty high-profile members of the local shipping community debated current issues and future prospects in Polish shipbuilding.  
 
2008-05-19   Germanischer Lloyd Enlarges Ship Plan Approval in Shanghai    
  The plan approval office of classification society Germanischer Lloyd in Shanghai has moved to new, larger offices. With an open office afternoon, a series of technical presentations held in the newly established seminar room and an official opening ceremony in the evening Germanischer Lloyd has inaugurated the new facilities on the 11th floor of Shanghai Central Plaza at Huaihai Middle Road in Shanghai. More than 80 representatives of shipyards, ship design offices and ship owners attended. With the enlargement of the premises, Germanischer Lloyd caters to the rising demand for plan approval of the Chinese shipyards in China. The new site is for up to 50 naval architects and marine engineers.
 
 
2008-05-19   First Zhoushan Shipping Industry Expo 2008: China - 22 vessels ordered with GL class    
  22 vessels are being built with Germanischer Lloyd (GL) class at Ouhua Shipyard and Yangfan Shipyard. The contract signings for eight 1,284 TEU container vessels and six 1,500 TEU container vessels from Ouhua Shipyard and eight 5,000 units Pure Car and Truck Carrier from Yangfang Shipyard were celebrated at First Zhoushan Shipping Industry Expo 2008 this weekend. This celebration highlights the close relationship between both Shipyards and the Germany based classification society.

  In an industry characterised by increasingly keen competition, the key issues are designing, building and operating ships efficiently. 2008-05-14   GL moves Area Office to Copenhagen    
  To be as close to customers as possible was the reason for Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to move its Area Office from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Danish shipping in particular has experienced unprecedented growth: The Danish Shipowners’ Association expects growth of 50 percent over the next five years – referring to all activities from fleet size and newbuilding orders to earnings and turnovers.

Germanischer Lloyd continues its growth strategy of previous years. The classification society presented its financial figures for 2007 and announced a turnover of 421.7 million Euros. This is a gain of 57.3 million Euros (+16 %) compared to 2006.

  Oil and gas production platforms have to meet high safety standards protecting personnel, materials and the environment while being exposed to extreme stress. The right maintenance and inspection strategy helps extend their service life. At Offshore Technology Conference 2008, Germanischer Lloyd presents the Asset Integrity Management tool GALIOM. This service is used worldwide for supporting plant operation.
 
 
2008-05-05   Germanischer Lloyd acquires Trident Consultants    
  Germanischer Lloyd (GL) continues expanding its Industrial Services. From now on Trident Consultants, a global engineering consultancy based in Kuala Lumpur, is part of the Germanischer Lloyd Group. “With Trident Consultants we extend our range of services in the oil and gas sector significantly,” explains Pekka Paasivaara, Member of GL’s Executive Board. Previous acquisitions in Great Britain, Canada and the U.S. in the last nine months have strengthened the technical portfolio of Germanischer Lloyd considerably.  
 
2008-05-02   Posidonia 2008: Germanischer Lloyd presents CO2-Index    
  Reducing CO2 emissions from ships has a high environmental priority for the shipping industry. Germanischer Lloyd demonstrates the availability and functionality of a CO2-index for shipping: The classification society has launched a prototype CO2-index, based on MEPC/Circ.471. The innovative index is available for all GL classed ships. Each ship owner and management company can check the complete survey status of their GL classed fleet.
 
 
2008-04-29   Germanischer Lloyd at ShipTek 2008: “Strength Aspects and Weather Routing of Multi-Purpose Ships”    
  Adequate hull strength and safe weather routing are primary requirements for safe operation of multi-purpose ships. In his presentation “Strength Aspects and Weather Routing of Multi-Purpose Ships”, Dr Thomas E. Schellin, Department Analysis of Hull Structures and Damages at Germanischer Lloyd, informed on these requirements. The presentation took place today at ShipTek 2008 in Cochin, India.
 
 
2008-04-25   GL certifies first Sinovel Wind Turbine    
  According to the report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), China's energy consumption will rise to 4,500 TWh per year in 2015. In order to satisfy the demand for energy, China opens up new energy resources: Wind energy in particular is of growing importance. Sinovel, a leading Chinese wind turbine manufacturer, has now developed its own 3-MW wind turbine - with GL certification.  
 
2008-04-24   HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder certified according to CTQI standard    
  The Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) of  Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is the first terminal worldwide being certified according to the new “Container Terminal Quality Indicator (CTQI)“ standard. This international standard measures the performance of container terminals.  
 
2008-04-24   Sustainable Marine Transport: Germanischer Lloyd certifies Whale-Watching Hydrogen Vessel “Elding I”    
  Hydrogen vessel sets sail: After the successful assessment of the fuel cell system of “Elding I”, the whale-watching ship receives this hydrogen auxiliary power unit in addition to the regular diesel engine. Germanischer Lloyd certifies the fuel cell system and its integration according to the GL “Guidelines for Fuel Cell-Systems on board of ships and boats” (VI-3-11) ensuring the technical safety of fuel cell application. Today, the “Elding I” was inaugurated with a first test trip.  
 
2008-04-22   Advantica at Pipeline Technology Conference 2008: Pipeline Management in the 21st Century    
  Virtual pipeline management enables the user to perform a broad range of functions, including detailed monitoring of the integrity of pipeline operations. At Pipeline Technology Conference 2008 as part of the Hannover trade fair, Andrew Wilde, Department of Operations, Planning and Commercial Systems at Advantica, gives a presentation on “The Virtual Pipeline – Pipeline Management in the 21st Century”.
 
 
2008-04-21   Advanced Distribution System: Advantica releases SynerGEE® Electric 3.8 at IEEE/PES    
  Rising interest in distributed generation and electric storage devices is increasing the demand for safe, reliable and efficient operation of electric distribution systems. Advantica has significantly enhanced the functionality of its network modeling and analysis software SynerGEE Electric. The newly released SynerGEE Electric 3.8 features enhancements and extended functionality including data management and multi-year planning. At IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition 2008, Advantica presents this latest version of SynerGEE Electric.
 
 
2008-04-21   Germanischer Lloyd Opens 11th Station in China    
  With a festive gathering of more than 100 representatives from Chinese shipyards, the maritime supply industry and shipowners, Germanischer Lloyd inaugurated its new Station in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, yesterday. The team of more than 20 employees under the management of Station Manager Gerhard Patz service the ship newbuilding at five shipyards and 90 component manufacturers. In addition, they cover the regular fleet in service inspections at the ports of Yangzhou, Taizhou and Lianyungang.
 
 
2008-04-21   Closer cooperation on rule development agreed at GL's Hull Technical Committee - Korea    
  Germanischer Lloyd inaugurated a Hull Technical Committee in Korea. Main topic of discussion was the draft of the new classification rules for containerships. These are currently under preparation at Germanischer Lloyd. The Hull Technical Committee Korea is designed to be a forum of discussion for the refinement and improvement of the hull structural rules in direct dialogue with the users of the rules. 19 representatives of 7 Korean shipyards met in Busan at the Hull Technical Committee Korea. The elected chairman is Soon-Sik Lee, General Manager from Hyundai Heavy Industries. Further members include representatives of DSME, HHI, SHI, HHIC, HMD, HSHI and STX shipyards. Secretary to the Committee is Germanischer Lloyd’s Head of Plan Approval in Korea, Jai-Oh Sun.
 
 
2008-04-14   Marine Fuel Will Become Better – GL Customers Discuss MEPC Decisions    
  Shipping should become more environmentally friendly. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) convened its 57th meeting with this objective. The discussion focussed on the reduction of harmful emissions and ballast water management, as well as the planned convention for environmentally sound ship recycling. At the GL First Class Exchange Forum, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) discussed current developments with more than 60 interested customers.

  On 1 April 2008, Ms Heike Fölster took over the position of Head of “Finance & Accounting” at Germanischer Lloyd. She is the successor of Ditmar Grund who has retired at the end of March. The business field “Finance & Accounting” with approximately 90 employees comprises the Service Accounting, Claim Management, Finance and Accounting Departments as well as all commercial systems and procedures.  
 
2008-04-08   Germanischer Lloyd at Sea Japan in Tokyo - Newsletter “Sea Japan News” now available    
  On time with the international trade fair Sea Japan 2008 in Tokyo, Germanischer Lloyd has issued a special newsletter in Japanese language. “Sea Japan News” present the company's latest activities with regard to classification, environment, eco/new synergy business and the Japanese maritime industry. “Ships ‘Made in Japan’ are high-quality”, says GL Area manager Lambertus Kamper in his interview with “Sea Japan News” about the established shipbuilding nation. The newsletter presents Germanischer Lloyd’s computer-aided approval process for ship drawings, condition monitoring for machinery, ballast water management and the new standard for container ports “Container Terminal Quality Standard (CTQI)”.

  Shipyards need to produce a record number of ballast tank coatings from next year. The annual Hellenic Technical Committee of Germanischer Lloyd focused on the practical implications of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Performance Standard for Protective Coatings, adopted in December last year.

  Vibration, wind and weather, collisions and corrosion – industrial installations in the underwater realm are subject to a wide range of loads and stresses. Welding and cutting work on the legs of drilling platforms represents a particular challenge. Modern joining and cutting procedures underwater help to reduce costs. The latest solutions and results on the topic will be discussed by over 80 experts at the first convention on underwater technology on 2 and 3 April in Hamburg, Germany.

The shipowners’ commitment to comply with an exceeding range of international standards can now be applied with Germanischer Lloyd’s new service for fuel oil tank protection: Apart from drawing pre-checks, the classification society offers design optimization helping to meet the new MARPOL requirements on fuel oil tanks and therefore improve the environmental safety of the ship. 2008-03-25   Bangladesh: Export Ship Newbuilding Orders with class Germanischer Lloyd    
  Bangladesh shipyard Highspeed has won an order of eight 4,500 dwt multi-purpose vessels by Dutch shipping company Hollander Scholtens. The ships will be built to Germanischer Lloyd class.

  An intensive collaboration on engineering training, including practical training courses, has been agreed between classification society Germanischer Lloyd and Vietnam Maritime University (VIMARU). The cooperation was signed during VietShip 2008 trade fair by DSc. Dang Van Uy, Headmaster of VIMARU, Dr. Le Viet luong, Director of the Faculty of Shipbuilding, Le Thanh Binh, Country Manager Vietnam at GL, and Hans-Ulrich Schulze, Director of GL Academy. Germanischer Lloyd will provide two awards for outstanding academic performance to two best students of the VIMARU, a Naval Architect and a Marine Engineer, each year during the Graduation Ceremony.

  Germanischer Lloyd is an executive partner of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) which is the world’s largest cruise association. Approximately 100 CLIA Executive Partners provide services to the cruise industry. CLIA is dedicated to the growth of the cruise industry and serves as a non-governmental consultative organization to the International Maritime Organization.
 
 
2008-03-12   Vietship 2008: Vietnam shipbuilding boom - Six biggest container vessels ordered with GL class    
  Six container vessels are being built with Germanischer Lloyd (GL) class at Ha Long Shipyard and Bach Dang Shipyard. The contract signings for three 1,730 TEU and two 1,800 TEU container vessels from Halong Shipyard and one 1,730 TEU container vessel from Bach Dang Shipyard have been celebrated at VietShip. The signing ceremony took place today. It was part of a celebration highlighting the close relationship between both Shipyards and the Germany based classification society. The new ships have been ordered by Vinalines and Vinashinlines.

This document serves as evidence for reliable ship operation and compliance of above-average safety and quality standards.
 
 
2008-02-26   Launch of phase behaviour and fluid properties calculator "OilVLe"    
  Predicting the properties of oil and gas under various conditions, improves the efficiency of their extraction and processing. Hydrocarbons occur with a wide range of properties from dry gas like methane to sticky pitch lakes. These characteristics influence reservoir depletion strategies and processing equipment. Advantica’s new software application “OilVLe” generates thermodynamic data to predict phase behaviour and properties of simple and complex hydrocarbon mixtures over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Reservoir and petroleum engineers in the oil and gas industry can now model oil and gas reservoir and surface conditions. In addition to oil and gas production, OilVLe can calculate properties for gas injection and for the disposal of gases, such as underground carbon dioxide sequestration.
 
 
2008-02-22   Eco-friendly ship recycling: E.R. Schiffahrt first shipping company with GL certificate    
  The containership „E.R. Los Angeles“ (currently trading as m.v. „CSCL Los Angeles“) is the first vessel worldwide to meet the new requirements on environment-friendly ship recycling issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). In a pilot project, Hamburg charter shipping company E.R. Schiffahrt – supported by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) – compiled the so-called Inventory of Hazardous Materials according to the IMO convention. This list includes all potentially environmental harmful materials which are used in ship structures or which are part of the equipment. The compilation and localisation of this data is a core topic of the IMO convention. In the course of this year, IMO will issue the draft of a binding regulation on safe and environment-friendly ship recycling.   
 
2008-02-15   GL extends Executive Board    
  The new Member of the Executive Board for the Industrial Services at Germanischer Lloyd AG will be Pekka Paasivaara. As from next Monday, the Finn will be responsible for the strongly growing Industrial Services segment. So far, the 46-year-old Paasivaara has been Member of the Executive Board at Lenze AG, a manufacturer of drive and automation technology headquartered in the German town of Hameln. In this position he has been responsible for all sales, service and marketing issues. Before that, the economist headed the drive and control technology department at Bosch Rexroth; he also worked at ABB.  
 
2008-02-13   GL opens new office in Kaliningrad    
  Germanischer Lloyd expands its surveyor network: Already operating offices in St Petersburg, Volgograd, Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Vladivostok, the classification society has now opened a new site office in Kaliningrad. Russia is presently accelerating to revive national shipbuilding. Accordingly, the demand for classificatory services increases.
 
 
2008-02-07   HELMEPA receives ISO 9001:2000 certification    
  For 25 years the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) has been working to eliminate ship generated pollution and enhance safety at sea. On Monday, the Maritime Sector of HELMEPA received the ISO 9001:2000 Certificate as a Maritime Training Centre from classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL). In addition, the revised version of HELMEPA’s “Ship’s Manual” has been presented at the event. The publication was jointly compiled by the Association and GL.  
 
2008-01-29   Progress in simulation-based ship design    
  Simulation-based ship design increasingly replaces traditional-based design. Extensive experience gathered over the last ten years on this topic enables Germanischer Lloyd, as one of the world’s leading technical supervisory organizations, to present various approaches and state-of-the-art at the Pacific 2008 trade fair. The presentation “Progress in simulation-based design” took place today at the Maritime Engineering Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.
 
 
2008-01-23   Challenging hot spots: Reliable fatigue assessment of marine structures    
  Fatigue assessment in shipping is vital in order to predict the structural durability of welded joints. Progress made during the past decade regarding different approaches was presented at the seminar “Local Approaches for Fatigue Assessment of Marine Structures” at Germanischer Lloyd headquarter. The seminar revived interest from engineers and research scientists from all around the world: 50 international experts took part in the seminar, coming from all over Europe and Asia.
 
 
2008-01-14   Royal Malaysian Navy commissions GL    
  Four corvettes of the type MEKO 100 RMN ordered by the Royal Malaysian Navy will be classed by Germanischer Lloyd. Members of the Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn. Bhd. based in Malaysia and GL signed the contract.
